Island Biogeography and Terrestrial Biomes

Ever wondered why certain species are found only on specific islands, or how vast deserts and lush rainforests come to be? This course provides a comprehensive, text-based introduction to the core concepts of island biogeography and the characteristics of Earth's major terrestrial biomes, equipping you with a fundamental understanding of global ecological patterns. Through detailed explanations and written exercises, you will gain a solid grasp of how life is distributed across our planet. Learn to: Understand the foundational principles of island biogeography, including key models like the MacArthur-Wilson equilibrium model. Analyze the factors influencing species diversity and extinction rates on islands and in fragmented habitats. Identify and characterize the major terrestrial biomes across the globe, from tundras to tropical rainforests. Learn how climate, geography, and human activity shape different ecosystems and their unique biodiversity. Apply ecological concepts to contemporary conservation challenges, such as habitat loss and climate change impacts. Practice interpreting ecological data and patterns through written exercises. The course begins with an exploration of foundational ecological concepts, then delves into the specifics of island biogeography, including its key models and implications. It then transitions to a detailed examination of Earth's diverse terrestrial biomes, concluding with their relevance to modern ecological issues and conservation. This course is designed for absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of ecology or biology. All essential terminology and concepts are explained clearly from the ground up. Embark on your journey to understand the intricate patterns of life on Earth.
