Foundations of Neuro-Ophthalmology

Neuro-ophthalmology sits at the intersection of vision and the nervous system. Sound practice rests on understanding the visual pathways, the principles of localization, and the common conditions encountered. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the visual pathways from retina to occipital cortex, recognize the principles of lesion localization, identify common neuro-ophthalmic conditions, and understand the role of imaging in evaluation. What you will learn: - The visual pathway anatomy from retina to occipital cortex - The principles of visual field defect localization - The principles of ocular motility and cranial nerve assessment - Common conditions including optic neuritis, papilledema, and cranial nerve palsies - The principles of pupillary examination and afferent pupillary defects - The role of imaging including MRI and OCT in neuro-ophthalmic cases - The role of urgent referral for time-critical presentations The course uses readings, pathway diagrams, case examples, and reflection questions. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for optometrists, ophthalmologists, neurology trainees, and others interested in neuro-ophthalmic foundations. It does not replace supervised clinical training or specialty mentorship. By the end you will have a structured foundation in neuro-ophthalmology principles.
