About this course

A Vipassana practice that lasts years looks very different from one that is weeks old. Periods of clarity give way to months of dryness. What felt like progress dissolves. The relationship to teacher and tradition deepens or fractures. Long-term meditators consistently describe a nonlinear path that requires frameworks the introductory course rarely provides. This course addresses that need. By the end of this course you will be able to recognize the classical stages of insight (vipassana nanas) as a map — not a guarantee — of long-term practice development, identify the patterns that commonly cause practitioners to abandon or distort their practice over time, articulate a principled approach to integrating insight into ethical conduct and relational life, and engage critically with scholarship on long-term meditation effects. What you will learn: - The classical progress of insight (nanas) as described in the Visuddhimagga and Mahasi Sayadaw's commentary — what each stage describes and how to hold this map lightly - The "dark night" phenomenon in Vipassana: what classical texts say about difficult stages and how to navigate them without catastrophizing or dismissing them - How sustained practice changes the relationship between formal sitting and daily life — the classical teaching on sila-samadhi-panna as an integrated path - The role of a teacher in long-term Vipassana: what a skilled teacher provides and what it means to practice without close guidance - Common distortions of long-term practice: spiritual bypassing, attachment to attainment, and the quietism that can result from misunderstanding equanimity - Comparative perspectives: how other Buddhist traditions (Tibetan, Zen) conceptualize the long-term path differently, and what Vipassana practitioners can learn from those frameworks - Academic research on long-term meditators: what longitudinal studies suggest and what they cannot determine - Designing a multi-year practice review: a structured reflection framework for assessing where you are and reorienting your practice with honesty The course draws on classical Theravada texts, contemporary teacher commentaries, and academic research on long-term meditation practice. Each section includes reflection prompts designed for practitioners with genuine experience — questions that require honest self-examination rather than beginner-level orientation. A practice architecture worksheet guides you through designing a sustainable multi-year framework. This course is designed for practitioners with at least one year of regular Vipassana practice, including those who have attended at least one extended retreat. It is not suitable as a first introduction to the practice. This course is educational in nature and does not substitute for guidance from a qualified meditation teacher.
