Understanding Plate Tectonics and Natural Hazard Safety

Natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions shape our planet and directly impact human communities. Understanding the underlying science of plate tectonics is essential for evaluating environmental risks and protecting human lives. In this course, you will build a solid foundation in Earth science and natural hazard mitigation through clear text lessons. What you'll learn: • Understand core geological concepts, tectonic plate boundaries, and fundamental terminology. • Analyze the mechanical causes of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis. • Explore modern seismic monitoring technologies, early warning networks, and risk mapping tools. • Study basic structural engineering safety concepts that increase building resilience in seismic zones. • Prepare personal and community emergency action plans for geohazard events. The material begins with basic terminology and geological concepts before introducing hazard analysis and practical preparedness measures. This course is designed for beginners, requiring no prior science or engineering background. Begin your learning journey to better understand our dynamic planet and prepare for natural events.
