Adopting and Parenting: Bonding, Open Relationships, and the Long Arc
Apply long-term parenting strategies for the years after placement, including bonding, talking about adoption, and open relationships with birth families.
About this course
The adoption process ends with finalization, but adoptive parenting lasts a lifetime. The first months at home, the years of conversations about adoption, and the relationships with birth families all shape your child's experience. This applied course addresses that long arc.
By the end of this course you will be able to support attachment and bonding in the early months, talk about adoption in age-appropriate ways across childhood, navigate open or semi-open relationships with birth families, address issues that often appear in adolescence, and connect with the adoption community over time.
What you will learn:
- How to support attachment in newborns, older infants, toddlers, and older children
- How to handle the first weeks and months at home including sleep, feeding, and connection
- How to talk about adoption in age-appropriate ways from preschool through teen years
- How to navigate open or semi-open relationships with birth families with respect and consistency
- How to address transracial adoption considerations including identity, community, and racism
- How to recognize and respond to grief, loss, and identity questions that may arise across childhood and adolescence
- How to build connections with other adoptive families and resources over time
The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: an early-attachment plan, an age-appropriate conversation map, a birth family relationship plan, a transracial adoption plan if relevant, an adolescence-readiness plan, and a community engagement plan.
This course is written for adoptive parents at any stage from pre-placement through later childhood. By the end you will move from focusing on the adoption process itself to actively parenting in ways that support your child's whole story, and your family will be prepared for the long, evolving relationship adoption creates.
