Foundations of Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Child and adolescent mental health is a developmental specialty. Sound practice rests on a clear understanding of how mental health unfolds across childhood, how common presentations differ from adult forms, and how family and school context shape both presentation and treatment. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe key developmental milestones relevant to mental health, recognize common psychiatric presentations across childhood and adolescence, identify the role of family and school context, and understand the principles of age-appropriate intervention. What you will learn: - The developmental psychology framework underlying child and adolescent mental health - Common presentations including anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism spectrum, and behavioral disorders - How presentations differ across age groups and how this affects assessment - The role of family systems and parent-child relationships - The role of school context, teachers, and educational supports - Principles of age-appropriate intervention including play-based and parent-mediated approaches - Ethical considerations specific to child and adolescent populations The course uses readings, developmental summaries, case examples, and reflection questions. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for mental health clinicians and trainees, allied health professionals working with children, educators, and primary care clinicians strengthening child mental health knowledge. It does not replace supervised clinical training or licensure requirements. By the end you will have a structured developmental and contextual understanding of child and adolescent mental health.
