Foundations of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing

Psychiatric and mental health nursing centers on the nurse-patient relationship as a therapeutic instrument. Sound practice rests on understanding therapeutic communication, structured assessment, and the relational stance that supports patients through mental health crises and chronic conditions. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the principles of therapeutic communication, recognize the structure of psychiatric assessment, identify the role of the nurse in inpatient and outpatient settings, and understand the principles of safety planning. What you will learn: - The principles of therapeutic communication including active listening and validation - The structure of psychiatric assessment including mental status examination - The role of the psychiatric nurse across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings - Principles of safety assessment including suicide and self-harm risk - Principles of milieu management on inpatient units - The role of psychopharmacology in psychiatric care and the nurse's role in medication management - Ethical and legal considerations including capacity and involuntary treatment The course uses readings, conversation examples, case scenarios, and reflection questions. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for nurses entering or strengthening psychiatric practice, nursing students preparing for mental health rotations, and educators developing psychiatric nursing curricula. It does not replace unit orientation, supervised clinical training, or institution-specific protocols.
