Foundations of Play-Based Learning

Play is the primary mode of learning in early childhood. Sound parenting rests on understanding the role of different play types in development and the principles of supporting play-based learning. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the developmental role of play, recognize the major play types and what each supports, identify the principles of play-based learning, and understand the role of adult involvement. What you will learn: - The developmental role of play across cognitive, motor, social, and emotional domains - The major play types including sensory, motor, imaginative, constructive, and social play - The principles of play-based learning and how it differs from formal instruction - The role of adult involvement and the difference between facilitating and directing - The role of materials and environment in supporting play - The role of independent play in building focus and creativity - The role of play in supporting school readiness The course uses readings, developmental summaries, case examples, and reflection prompts. Each module ends with applied exercises drawn from family situations. This course is written for parents and caregivers of young children. By the end you will have replaced uncertainty about how to support learning with a clearer understanding of play as the main vehicle, and you will be ready to support it deliberately.
