The Long Arc of Adoptive and Foster Parenting: Identity, Birth Family, and Adolescence

Adoptive and foster parenting is a long-term commitment that touches identity, birth family relationships, and the demands of adolescence. This applied course teaches integrated reasoning across the long arc. By the end of this course you will be able to support your child's identity work across childhood and adolescence, navigate birth family relationships thoughtfully, handle the unique demands of adolescence, and sustain the relationship into young adulthood. What you will learn: - Supporting identity work in age-appropriate ways across childhood - Approaches to birth family relationships including open arrangements over time - Approaches to transracial adoption considerations including racial identity - Approaches to adolescence including identity exploration and risk - Approaches to handling crises including running away or rejection - Approaches to transitions to young adulthood including legal and emotional shifts - Approaches to community and continued professional support The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: an identity support plan, a birth family relationship plan, a transracial adoption plan if applicable, an adolescence readiness plan, a crisis response framework, and a young adulthood plan. This course is written for adoptive and foster parents thinking across the long arc. By the end you will have moved from short-term coping to a sustained, long-arc approach to parenting in this context.
