Foundations of Newborn Care

Newborn care is one of the most intense and unfamiliar periods for new parents. Sound practice rests on understanding the essentials of feeding, sleep, soothing, and recognizing cues. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the structure of newborn days, recognize common newborn cues, identify the principles of safe care, and understand the signs that warrant medical attention. What you will learn: - The structure of typical newborn days including feeding, sleep, and wake periods - The principles of feeding including breastfeeding, formula, or combination - The principles of safe sleep for newborns - Common newborn cues including hunger, tired, and overstimulation signals - Soothing approaches including swaddling, holding, and shushing - Basic care tasks including diapering, bathing, and umbilical cord care - The signs that warrant urgent medical attention The course uses readings, summaries, case examples, and reflection prompts. Each module ends with applied exercises. The course is informational and does not substitute for pediatric medical care. This course is written for expectant parents and those caring for newborns.
