About this course

The discharge day is often anticipated as the end of the hardest part, but for many parents of multiples who spent weeks or months in the NICU, the transition home opens a new set of challenges: managing the medical aftercare of premature infants, building the bonds that were interrupted or complicated by NICU separation, processing the accumulated emotional weight of the NICU period, and establishing family life on terms that are different from what was anticipated before birth. By the end of this course you will be able to apply an attachment-informed approach to bonding with infants whose early weeks were spent in NICU, navigate the medical aftercare requirements of premature multiples after discharge, recognize and respond to your own postpartum mental health needs in the context of a NICU experience, and build a family life that integrates the NICU experience as part of your children's story. What you will learn: - The research on parent-infant attachment after premature birth and NICU separation: what we know about resilience, the factors that support attachment, and the conditions that place it at greater risk - Practical attachment-building approaches for premature infants at home: kangaroo care continuation, responsive feeding, and developmentally appropriate interaction for the corrected age - How to interpret and respond to the behavioral cues of a premature infant, which differ in important ways from the cues of a full-term baby - The medical aftercare landscape for premature multiples: follow-up appointments, developmental monitoring, feeding support, and when to seek early intervention services - How to recognize postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress, and complicated grief in yourself or your partner, and how to access appropriate support - The NICU experience as a shared story: how to process it with your partner, how to begin building the narrative you will eventually share with your children, and how to connect with the community of other NICU parents - How to manage the anxiety that often persists after NICU discharge — the hypervigilance around illness, developmental milestones, and medical appointments - How family life stabilizes over the months after NICU discharge and what parents describe as the turning-point experiences in their transition from NICU parents to parents of growing children The course is structured around five chapters: the discharge transition, the first month at home, the two-to-four-month stabilization period, the six-month developmental review, and the first-year reflection. Each chapter combines a practical focus with an emotional and relational dimension. Case narratives follow two families — one with both twins discharged simultaneously, one with a staggered discharge — through each period. Supplementary materials include the postpartum mental health self-assessment, the premature infant cue guide, and the first-year developmental monitoring worksheet adjusted for corrected age. This course is suitable for parents of multiples who have experienced or are preparing for a NICU stay, and for those in the months after discharge who are navigating the longer recovery arc. This course is informational and educational; it does not substitute for care from your neonatal follow-up team, pediatric provider, or mental health professional. Please reach out to your healthcare team for any clinical concerns about your babies' development or your own wellbeing.
