Emergency Preparedness for Severe Postpartum Mood Disorders: Recognition Checklists and Response Plans
Practical tools to help families prepare in advance for the possibility of a postpartum psychiatric emergency — knowing the signs, the plan, and the right call to make.
About this course
The families who respond most effectively to a postpartum psychiatric emergency are almost always those who prepared in advance. When symptoms of postpartum psychosis appear, the speed and clarity of the response matters significantly — and confusion in the moment about what you are seeing or what to do creates dangerous delays. Building a recognition-and-response plan before birth is a concrete way to reduce that risk.
By the end of this course you will be able to create a written emergency reference card listing the warning signs that require immediate action, build a response plan that identifies who to call and what to do, and conduct a pre-birth conversation with your partner about postpartum psychiatric emergencies.
What you will learn:
- How to create a one-page symptom recognition reference card that clearly lists the signs of postpartum psychosis, separated from the signs of postpartum depression and baby blues
- How to build a written emergency response plan that includes the nearest emergency psychiatric facility, a 24-hour crisis line, your OB or midwife's after-hours line, and the steps to take in sequence
- How to prepare the pre-birth conversation with your partner: what to cover, how to frame it without creating undue anxiety, and how to ensure you are both prepared to act if symptoms appear
- How to communicate your emergency plan to a designated family member or trusted friend who can serve as a backup responder
- What to say to emergency services when calling about a postpartum psychiatric emergency, including the specific language that conveys urgency accurately
- How to document the postpartum period in the first two weeks if you or your partner carry known risk factors, using a simple daily check-in that monitors for the earliest signs
- How to prepare a psychiatric history summary to bring to any emergency evaluation, so that the clinical team has critical information quickly
- How to support someone with postpartum psychosis while awaiting emergency care, including what to avoid doing and how to stay calm and present
The workbook section contains six exercises that together produce a complete emergency preparedness package. Each exercise includes a worked example and a template for your own use. The package is designed to be completed in the third trimester and reviewed together by both partners before the due date. It should be printed and placed somewhere accessible, not saved only in a phone.
This course is designed for expectant parents — especially those with known risk factors for severe postpartum mood disorders — and their partners, family members, and birth support people. No prior background in psychiatry or emergency medicine is required. This material is educational and does not constitute medical advice. Postpartum psychosis is a medical emergency. If symptoms appear, do not wait — contact emergency services immediately.
