About this course

The immediate crisis of separation eventually subsides, but many people find themselves months later in a state they had not anticipated: not in acute pain, but not quite themselves either. The identity that was built in the relationship, the future that was expected, and the daily life that was shared are gone โ€” and what comes next is not yet clear. This course addresses that longer recovery arc. By the end of this course you will be able to identify the specific identity and life dimensions most disrupted by your separation, apply deliberate practices for rebuilding a life that feels genuinely yours, navigate the social and relational changes that follow separation, and recognize the markers of genuine recovery rather than surface functioning. What you will learn: - The dimensions of post-separation life that most commonly need deliberate reconstruction: identity, social world, daily structure, purpose, and relationship with yourself - The difference between functional recovery (you are managing) and genuine recovery (you are thriving), and how to move from one to the other - How to rebuild a sense of individual identity that was partially constructed in and through the relationship - Navigating the social disruptions that follow separation: changed friendships, awkward shared networks, and building new community - Managing the emotional ambivalence that often persists long after the acute phase โ€” missing the person, grieving the relationship even while knowing the separation was right - The role of new relationships in recovery: when they help, when they are avoidance, and how to approach them with clarity - Developing a personal narrative about the separation that is honest, non-victimizing, and forward-looking - Building a life structure post-separation that supports continued growth: practices, goals, connections, and meaning The course unfolds in three phases. The assessment phase uses a life domains review to identify which dimensions of your life have been most disrupted by the separation and which remain intact โ€” a map of where the rebuilding work needs to happen. The reconstruction phase examines each disrupted domain and provides frameworks for intentional rebuilding: identity, social world, daily structure, and long-term purpose. The integration phase focuses on the synthesis โ€” developing a coherent, forward-looking life that honors the loss honestly while genuinely moving beyond it. Reflection exercises, self-assessment tools, and planning templates support each phase throughout. This course is designed for adults who have been through a significant separation and are working on long-term recovery rather than crisis management. Suitable for people new to thinking about post-separation recovery as an active process. This course is educational and does not substitute for individual therapy or professional mental health support. Please seek professional help if you are experiencing persistent severe symptoms.
