About this course
Living as a bisexual or pansexual person across adult life means navigating recurring identity challenges that do not simply resolve after coming out — the erasure that comes with each new relationship, family events that presume heterosexuality, moments when LGBTQ+ spaces feel unwelcoming to bi and pan people, and the cumulative toll of managing others' misunderstanding. Building sustained wellbeing as a bisexual or pansexual person requires an active, long-term practice of identity resilience, community engagement, and self-care.
By the end of this course you will be able to apply identity-resilience strategies to recurring biphobia and erasure across multiple life contexts, build and sustain connections with bisexual and pansexual community as a source of affirmation and support, navigate the specific identity challenges of major life transitions — partnering, parenthood, divorce, career change, aging — as a bi or pan person, manage the cumulative effects of minority stress with evidence-informed approaches, and mentor or support others on the bi and pan spectrum from a position of lived experience.
What you will learn:
- Identity resilience: the psychological research on what protects bisexual and pansexual people from the most severe effects of minority stress
- How biphobia and erasure manifest differently across life stages and how long-term coping strategies evolve accordingly
- Major life-transition challenges: how partnering, parenthood, and other milestones intersect with bisexual and pansexual identity in specific ways
- Community engagement across adulthood: finding, evaluating, and contributing to bi and pan community spaces over time
- Managing accumulated minority stress: the research on effective coping, the risks of the strategies that are common but counterproductive, and what actually helps
- How bisexual and pansexual identity can deepen and clarify over decades rather than simply persisting as established in youth
- Supporting younger or newly out bisexual and pansexual people: what is most useful from someone with lived experience
- Building a personal bi or pan identity affirmation practice for the long term
The course takes a lifespan perspective, drawing on longitudinal research, community testimony, and identity development theory. Case studies follow bisexual and pansexual individuals across decades, showing how recurring challenges are encountered and how wellbeing is maintained or rebuilt across different life phases. Reflection prompts invite you to identify your own recurring challenges and current resilience resources. The final section focuses on deliberate long-term identity practice and community contribution.
This course is designed for bisexual and pansexual adults who want to build a more deliberate long-term approach to their own wellbeing and identity resilience — prior engagement with bisexual or pansexual identity topics is helpful but not required. It is also valuable for allies and partners who want to understand the long-term dimensions of bi and pan life. This course is educational in nature and does not substitute for therapy or counseling.
