Sufism in the Contemporary World: Applied Perspectives on Islamic Mysticism and Spiritual Development
Examine how Sufi practices of Dhikr, Muraqaba, and heart-centered spirituality are lived, adapted, and debated in contemporary Muslim communities globally.
About this course
Sufism did not disappear in the modern era โ it transformed. Sufi orders operate across North Africa, the Levant, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and in diaspora communities around the world. They have also attracted non-Muslim interest and faced sharp criticism from within Islam. Understanding Sufism today means engaging with both its living transmission and the controversies that surround it.
By the end of this course you will be able to describe the contemporary landscape of major Sufi orders and their geographic distribution, analyze debates about Sufi practice within modern Islamic discourse, examine how Sufi practices are adapted in diaspora and digital contexts, evaluate claims about Sufism's relevance to contemporary spiritual and psychological wellbeing, and read academic accounts of contemporary Sufi communities critically.
What you will learn:
- The current global presence of major Sufi orders: Naqshbandiyya, Qadiriyya, Shadhiliyya, Mevlevi, Tijaniyya โ geographic reach and institutional forms
- Debates within Islamic discourse on the legitimacy of specific Sufi practices and how different scholarly traditions frame these disputes
- How Sufi communities function in diaspora settings: identity, transmission challenges, and adaptation of ritual practice outside traditional Muslim-majority contexts
- The phenomenon of "neo-Sufism" and how it differs from lineage-based tariqat practice
- Academic research on Dhikr and Muraqaba in the context of contemporary psychology of religion and contemplative science โ what the research says and what it cannot say
- How the Internet and social media have altered the transmission of Sufi teaching and the accountability structures of the teacher-student relationship
- Contemporary Sufi poetry and music in global circulation: what moves from traditional context into popular culture and what is lost in that movement
- A structured case study of a single Sufi community navigating modernity โ using a framework of institution, practice, and identity
This course is organized around case studies and analytical readings, moving from macro-level surveys of the contemporary landscape to detailed examinations of specific communities and debates. Reflection prompts encourage you to apply each framework to a different context or a context of your choice. A final synthesis worksheet asks you to construct an analytical portrait of contemporary Sufism that holds together historical continuity and real change. This course is educational and informational and does not constitute religious guidance.
This course is designed for learners with some background in Islamic studies or Sufism who want to engage with contemporary dimensions of the tradition. Suitable for scholars, journalists, practitioners, and anyone interested in Islam and modernity. No prior fieldwork experience is required.
