About this course
Understanding the principles of precision agriculture and knowing how to actually process a yield map, generate a prescription, or interpret a multispectral drone image are two different things. This workbook course develops the practical skills of working with precision agriculture data: the step-by-step procedures for turning raw sensor data into actionable management decisions that can be implemented in the field.
By the end of this course you will be able to work through a soil sampling and mapping workflow from sample collection design through laboratory results to management zone creation, interpret a yield map and identify agronomically meaningful patterns, design a variable-rate prescription map for a key input based on soil and yield data, and analyze drone imagery to identify crop stress areas and plan scouting priorities.
What you will learn:
- Soil sampling design: choosing between grid and management zone approaches for a given field
- Reading and interpreting a soil analysis report: which parameters matter most for each major crop
- Yield map cleaning and interpretation: removing erroneous data, smoothing, and pattern identification
- Creating management zones: combining multiple data layers to define areas with similar production potential
- Variable-rate prescription design: translating management zone data into a prescription map for fertilizer or seeding
- Drone flight planning concepts: overlap, altitude, sensor selection, and mission execution workflow
- Interpreting NDVI and multispectral imagery: identifying chlorosis, water stress, and pest damage patterns
- Connecting prescription maps to machinery: how agronomic data reaches a field computer
Each unit provides a structured workflow narrative, worked examples using sample data sets (soil reports, yield maps, imagery outputs presented in annotated form), and step-by-step analysis worksheets. After completing each worksheet independently, you review annotated worked examples that model the analytical process. Reflection prompts ask you to consider how each data layer changes the management decision you would make. This course is educational; flying drones requires compliance with national aviation authority regulations, and operating variable-rate machinery requires certified operator training.
This course is written for agronomists, precision agriculture consultants, farmers managing their own data, and agricultural students who want to develop practical data-handling skills. It is suitable for those new to working with precision agriculture data sets. Basic familiarity with spreadsheets is helpful but no prior GIS or programming background is required.
