About this course
The transition from learning techniques to developing genuine craft is one of the most challenging and rewarding passages in any making practice. A ceramicist who has mastered wheel throwing and glazing basics faces a different set of questions: What is your work about? How do you develop a coherent voice across a body of work? How do you sustain creative and physical practice over years? How do you engage with the history of ceramics as both tradition and living conversation? This applied course addresses those questions directly.
By the end of this course you will be able to articulate the conceptual framework behind a coherent body of ceramic work, describe strategies for developing and refining a personal surface treatment and glaze palette, analyze the work of at least three ceramicists from different traditions and explain what you learn from them, and construct a practical plan for sustaining and developing your ceramics practice over the long term.
What you will learn:
- Developing a coherent body of work: how form, surface, and concept interact to create a recognizable voice
- Influence and originality: how to engage seriously with historical and contemporary ceramics without copying
- Glaze development as long-term practice: testing methodology, keeping records, and refining a personal palette
- Series work versus one-off making: the strategic and creative advantages of each approach
- Ergonomics and studio longevity: managing physical demands, repetitive strain, and sustainable working practices
- Documenting your work: photography for craft, keeping a making journal, and the value of process records
- Exhibition, markets, and community: how ceramicists engage with the wider craft world
- Continuing development: workshops, mentorship, residencies, and the role of community in long-term craft growth
The course draws on readings from ceramics history, craft theory, and the reflective writing of practitioners across multiple traditions. Case studies examine the careers of ceramicists who developed distinct voices over decades, with analysis of how their practice evolved and what drove key transitions. Reflection prompts invite sustained personal examination of your own work, influences, and aspirations. Planning worksheets guide you through developing a body of work concept, a glaze testing schedule, and a studio sustainability plan. This course is educational; safe ceramics practice requires attention to material hazards (silica dust, raw glaze materials), kiln safety, and studio ventilation. Supervised training and appropriate safety protocols are required for all studio work.
This course is designed for intermediate and advanced ceramicists who have foundational forming and firing skills and are ready to engage with the longer arc of craft development. It is suitable for those who have completed foundational ceramics coursework or have equivalent studio experience. Prior hands-on ceramics practice is assumed.
