About this course
Mastering the foundational operations of leatherworking — cutting, stitching, tooling, finishing — is the beginning of a craft life, not the end of it. The experienced leatherworker faces a richer and more demanding set of questions: How do you develop original designs with structural integrity? How do you handle complex constructions involving gussets, linings, hardware, and multiple materials? How do you build a practice that sustains your interest, your body, and — if commercial — your livelihood across years and decades? This applied course addresses the long arc of serious leatherwork.
By the end of this course you will be able to design and construct a complex leather piece involving at least three structural components, hardware integration, and a lining, apply design principles to develop original patterns with appropriate proportions and load-bearing structure, evaluate your own work critically against professional quality benchmarks, and construct a practical development plan for your leatherworking practice — whether as a craft hobby, a custom trade, or a small production business.
What you will learn:
- Pattern development from scratch: from concept sketch to working pattern with seam allowances and hardware placement
- Complex construction: gussets, bellows, box corners, and hidden seams — structural considerations and construction sequences
- Hardware selection and installation: rivets, Chicago screws, buckles, D-rings, and magnetic closures done properly
- Lining materials and attachment: when to line, what materials to use, and clean lining attachment technique
- Wet molding and forming: shaping leather over a last or form for fitted pieces like sheaths and cases
- Repair and restoration: assessing and rehabilitating worn leather goods — a skill for the serious practitioner
- Pricing and business basics for custom leatherwork: cost of materials, time, and what the market supports
- Ergonomics and long-term practice: managing hand fatigue, repetitive strain, and workspace setup for sustainability
The course draws on craft literature, case studies of professional leatherworkers and small leather goods producers, design principles from product design and fashion, and reflective readings on the nature of long-term craft practice. Units alternate between technical instruction and strategic reflection, with practical worksheets guiding original pattern development and a practice sustainability plan. Reflection prompts invite you to examine your own aesthetic direction, the quality standards you aspire to, and the practical constraints that shape your practice. This course is educational; commercial leatherwork involving sale of goods requires attention to applicable consumer product regulations, and all tool use requires appropriate safety practices. Supervised hands-on training is recommended before undertaking complex constructions independently.
This course is designed for intermediate leatherworkers who have mastered basic cutting, stitching, and finishing and are ready to work with more complex constructions and develop a personal design direction. It is suitable for serious hobbyists, aspiring custom craftspeople, and those considering a professional leatherworking practice. Prior hands-on leatherworking experience is assumed.
