Foundations of Black and Grey Tattooing

Black and grey tattooing is often described as the most demanding discipline in the craft, because it relies entirely on the illusion of volume created through controlled gradations of a single pigment. Artists who skip a rigorous study of tonal values produce work that looks muddy in the skin and fades unevenly within months. By the end of this course you will be able to explain how value contrast creates the perception of depth in monochromatic skin art, identify the tonal relationships that define realism and portraiture, describe how grey wash is prepared and how dilution ratios affect healed results, and evaluate reference photography for suitability as tattoo source material. No tattooing equipment is required for this foundational course. This course is designed for apprentice tattoo artists and trained artists in other styles who are new to black and grey and want a solid theoretical base before intensive supervised practice. No prior tattooing experience is required to follow the concepts, though the material is most valuable to those already in an apprenticeship or professional studio environment. This course is educational; supervised hands-on training under a licensed or certified mentor is required before practicing on clients, and applicable health and safety certifications must be obtained as required by local regulations.
