Black and Grey Shading Workbook: Techniques and Practice Plans
Step-by-step exercises in grey wash mixing, shading passes, and contrast building — structured practice plans you can bring straight to your studio practice sessions.
About this course
Theoretical knowledge of value does not automatically translate into smooth, controlled shading passes. Artists at every stage of development hit the same wall: understanding what the work should look like and being unable to reproduce it consistently. Structured, deliberate practice with clear checkpoints is what closes that gap.
By the end of this course you will be able to prepare grey wash sets at three dilution levels, plan a shading sequence for a reference image, execute controlled packing and whip-shade passes on practice skin, and self-evaluate your work against a tonal reference scale.
What you will learn:
- Setting up a grey wash palette: mixing ratios, consistency tests, and labeling for studio use
- Reading a reference image and creating a simplified tonal map as a pre-tattoo planning document
- Foundational shading pass structure: building from dark anchors to light midtones in sequence
- Circular packing technique: pressure, speed, and overlap patterns for solid grey fills
- Whip shading and feathering: entry and exit angles that produce seamless transitions
- Working with curved magnums: needle depth, skin stretch, and avoiding blowouts
- Common errors — streaking, patchiness, over-worked skin — and how to diagnose and correct them
- Evaluating healed reference photos to set realistic expectations for clients
Each chapter presents a technique, a written worked example describing how a professional artist executes it, and a structured practice drill with specific objectives and self-assessment criteria. Checklists help you track consistency across practice sessions. The workbook is designed to complement supervised studio time, not replace it.
Written for tattoo apprentices and early-career artists who have access to a working studio and a supervising mentor. Suitable for anyone who has completed foundational training and wants a more systematic approach to building shading consistency. This course is educational; all tattooing practice must be conducted under qualified supervision, and artists must hold applicable health and safety certifications as required by their jurisdiction.
