Foundations of Color Tattooing: Theory, Pigment, and Skin

Color tattoos are unforgiving. An artist who does not understand how pigments behave in dermis tissue, how skin undertones shift perceived hue, or how saturation deteriorates over time will produce work that looks magnificent on day one and disappoints the client three years later. The foundation of lasting color work is knowledge, not just technique. By the end of this course you will be able to explain the color wheel as it applies to tattooing, predict how specific pigments interact with different skin tones, describe the mechanics of color packing and blending, and identify the stylistic conventions of neotraditional and watercolor tattooing. Self-assessment prompts after each module ask you to predict how a described technique would behave on a given skin type, reinforcing predictive reasoning. This course is designed for tattoo apprentices and artists new to color work who want to build a rigorous conceptual base. No prior tattooing experience is required to engage with the theory, though the material is most directly useful to those already in a studio apprenticeship.
