Partner and Family Support in Practice: Scripts, Checklists, and Daily Actions for Postpartum Mental Health
Practical tools and concrete guidance to help partners and family members provide daily, sustained support for a new parent navigating a postpartum mood disorder.
About this course
Wanting to support someone through a postpartum mood disorder and knowing what to do on an ordinary Tuesday are different things. Many partners and family members have good intentions but find that those intentions don't translate into effective daily actions โ especially when they are also exhausted, worried, and unsure how much to say or do. Practical tools make the gap between wanting to help and actually helping smaller.
By the end of this course you will be able to apply a small set of daily support practices that are evidence-informed and sustainable, use communication scripts that reduce the risk of dismissive or unhelpful responses, and build a simple system for monitoring progress and recognizing when professional escalation is needed.
What you will learn:
- A set of five daily support actions โ each taking less than ten minutes โ that consistently help partners and family members provide meaningful, non-intrusive support
- Scripts for the most common support conversations: responding to a disclosure of difficult feelings, checking in during a low day, and asking how you can help without placing the planning burden on the person who is struggling
- How to use a shared daily check-in practice to maintain communication about mood without turning every conversation into a clinical assessment
- How to create and use a household support checklist that distributes the practical burden of running a household during a mental health crisis without requiring the struggling parent to manage the list
- How to respond when your support is rejected or rebuffed, including how to stay calm, avoid taking it personally, and persist with care
- How to create a brief symptom monitoring log that you maintain as a supporter, so that you can describe changes accurately to a healthcare provider if needed
- How to prepare for and participate in a healthcare appointment as a supporting family member, including what information to share and how to do so without speaking over the patient
- How to recognize and name caregiver fatigue in yourself and what brief self-restoration practices most effectively prevent burnout in the supporting role
The workbook section of this course contains eight exercises, each producing a tool or a practiced skill. Worked examples use composite supporting-partner scenarios to show the tools in context. A final exercise asks you to share your completed support plan with the new parent you are supporting and invite their feedback on what would be most helpful.
This course is designed for partners and family members who are actively supporting a new parent with a postpartum mood disorder. No prior experience with mental health caregiving is required. This material is educational; for clinical treatment of the new parent in your life, connect them with a licensed perinatal mental health professional as soon as possible if you have not already done so.
