About this course
The word "networking" is usually associated with career advancement, and the transactional connotations put many people off applying its insights to personal life. But the same social science that explains how professional networks form and function applies equally to friendship โ the weak ties that create new social opportunities, the structural holes that explain why some people know everyone while others circulate in isolated clusters, and the reciprocity dynamics that determine whether a new connection deepens or fades.
By the end of this course you will be able to explain the sociology of personal networks and how their structure affects social opportunity, distinguish the role of weak ties versus strong ties in expanding a social circle, describe the mechanisms through which acquaintances convert into friendships, identify the structural patterns in your own current social network, and understand what the research says about the composition of social circles that predict wellbeing and connection.
What you will learn:
- Network theory basics: nodes, ties, density, bridging ties, and structural holes applied to personal social life
- The strength of weak ties: why casual acquaintances are often more valuable for expanding your social world than close friends
- How reciprocity and social exchange function in friendship formation outside of professional contexts
- The role of proximity and repeated unplanned contact in converting acquaintances into friendships
- Network composition and wellbeing: what research shows about the ideal mix of close, medium, and peripheral connections
- How online social platforms affect personal network structure: the research on digital ties and real connection
- Homophily and its limits: why we naturally cluster with similar people and why deliberately diversifying a network enriches social life
- Personal network mapping: how to visualize and analyze the structure of your own social circle
The course is organized as a conceptual survey drawing on social network theory, sociology of friendship, and wellbeing research. Readings introduce each major concept and are followed by reflection prompts inviting you to apply the framework to your own network โ initially at an analytical, not evaluative, level. A personal network mapping exercise at the midpoint of the course gives you a visual representation of your own social structure to carry through the remaining sections.
This course is designed for adults who want to understand how social circles form and function โ no prior background in sociology or social science is required. It is suitable for people new to thinking systematically about personal networks and friendship. This course is educational and informational in nature.
