About this course
Many people encounter Vipassana during a ten-day retreat and then struggle to maintain any practice at all once they return to daily life. The intensity of an extended retreat is not replicable at home โ but the essential structure of the practice can be. This workbook provides the scaffolding for a realistic, progressive home practice that preserves the core instruction while fitting ordinary life.
By the end of this course you will be able to establish a stable sitting posture for extended practice, apply the body scan as taught in the Goenka tradition with clear attentional instruction, use the noting technique as taught in the Mahasi tradition as an alternative approach, build a progressive practice sequence from ten minutes to sixty minutes, and maintain a practice log that captures both sitting observations and integration into daily activity.
What you will learn:
- Establishing posture: sitting positions for comfort and alertness, use of cushions and chairs, managing physical discomfort without abandoning the session
- Anapana (breath observation) as the preparatory practice before Vipassana proper: detailed instructions for the first phase
- The body scan in the Goenka-style tradition: sequential movement of attention through the body, equanimity toward sensations, and common experiences at different stages
- The Mahasi-style noting technique: how to label arising mental and physical phenomena with light precision and why this method differs from the body scan
- Working with the five hindrances (desire, aversion, sloth, restlessness, doubt) as described in classical texts and encountered in practice
- A four-week progressive session schedule moving from short sittings to longer sustained practice
- Daily life integration: applying Vipassana attention during routine activities as a bridge between formal sittings
- A structured practice journal with weekly reflection prompts based on the progress of insight (vipassana nanas)
Each workbook section provides precise written instructions, a worked example of how the practice session might unfold, a common difficulties note, and a self-check reflection. Session templates are provided in two variants: Goenka-style body scan and Mahasi-style noting, so you can experiment with both approaches. All content is text-based.
This course is suitable for those new to Vipassana who want a home practice after a retreat or course, and for meditators of other traditions curious about insight practice. No prior meditation experience is strictly required. Please note this is an educational resource, not a substitute for teacher-guided practice; students experiencing significant psychological difficulty during meditation should seek guidance from a qualified teacher.
