About this course

Kabbalah did not remain an esoteric preserve of trained scholars. From the Hasidic revolution of the eighteenth century to the twentieth-century popularization of Jewish mysticism in America, kabbalistic ideas have moved steadily into wider Jewish and even secular culture. This trajectory raises important questions: What happens to a sophisticated mystical tradition when it is democratized? How do Hasidic masters translate Lurianic Kabbalah into a path of daily spiritual practice? What distinguishes serious engagement with the tradition from superficial appropriation? This course explores these questions through the long arc of Kabbalah's applied life. By the end of this course you will be able to trace the transformation of Lurianic Kabbalah into Hasidic practice and theology, compare at least three major Hasidic schools in their approach to kabbalistic concepts, evaluate contemporary Neo-Kabbalistic movements critically, and articulate the ethical and communal dimensions of kabbalistic thought as they apply to present-day Jewish life. What you will learn: - The Baal Shem Tov (Besht) and the founding of Hasidism: democracy of mystical access and devekut (cleaving to God) - Major Hasidic schools: Chabad-Lubavitch (intellectual mysticism), Breslov (personal prayer and hitbonenut), and Ger (ethical character) - Tikkun olam in Lurianic and contemporary usage: original meaning versus modern social justice framing - Neo-Kabbalism in the late twentieth century: Philip Berg's Kabbalah Centre and academic critics' responses - Practical Kabbalah: amulets, divine names, and the ethics of applying esoteric knowledge - Musar (ethical self-cultivation) and its relationship to kabbalistic anthropology of the soul - Kabbalistic prayer: kavvanot (directed intentions) and the structure of the siddur through a mystical lens - Women and Kabbalah: historical exclusion, feminist reinterpretation, and contemporary female practitioners The course draws on a combination of primary texts in translation, historical and sociological readings, and contemporary case studies. Units alternate between deep dives into Hasidic primary literature and analytical readings that situate developments in context. Reflection prompts invite you to consider your own relationship to tradition, spirituality, and the ethics of engaging with esoteric material. Self-assessment exercises test your ability to distinguish the positions of different schools and movements on key doctrinal questions. This course is designed for students and practitioners with a working knowledge of Jewish mysticism who want to trace its applied legacy into Hasidism and modernity. It is suitable for Jewish studies scholars, educators, rabbinical students, and engaged practitioners from across the denominational spectrum. Those new to Kabbalah should begin with the foundational course in this series. No prior background beyond basic familiarity with Jewish religious concepts is required to benefit fully.
