Foundations of Transmission and Drivetrain Systems
Understand how power flows from engine to wheels — manual and automatic transmissions, differentials, CV axles, and the principles behind drivetrain diagnostics.
About this course
Drivetrain faults are among the most misdiagnosed in automotive repair. A vibration attributed to wheel balance turns out to be a worn CV joint. A slipping automatic transmission is misidentified as an engine power issue. A differential noise is dismissed as tire noise until the carrier bearing fails completely. These errors almost always trace back to a weak mental model of how the drivetrain transfers, modifies, and distributes torque. This course fixes that.
By the end of this course you will be able to describe how manual and automatic transmissions change gear ratios and why, explain the role of the clutch pack, torque converter, and planetary gear set in an automatic transmission, understand how differentials distribute torque between driven wheels and under what conditions limited-slip or locking differentials engage, identify the types of CV joints used in front-wheel and all-wheel drive axles and their characteristic failure signatures, and approach drivetrain diagnostics using a structured method rather than trial and error.
What you will learn:
- Manual transmission gear ratios: why they exist, how synchromeshes work, and what synchronizer wear sounds like
- Clutch system components: pressure plate, disc, release bearing, and flywheel — function and wear indicators
- Automatic transmission fundamentals: torque converter lockup, planetary gear sets, and hydraulic shift control
- Modern automatic variants: dual-clutch transmissions and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs)
- Open vs. limited-slip differentials: how each distributes torque and where each is appropriate
- CV joint types: Rzeppa, tripod, and fixed vs. plunging joints — failure modes and noise characteristics
- Drivetrain diagnostics: isolating vibration by speed, load, and steering angle as diagnostic variables
- Drivetrain fluid service: identifying correct fluid specifications and understanding contamination indicators
The course is structured as a series of concept readings, each followed by annotated diagrams and a worked case example. The progression moves from manual gearboxes through automatic transmissions, then outward through the driveline to axles and differentials. Self-assessment exercises close each module.
This course is designed for automotive students, apprentice mechanics, and car enthusiasts who want a solid conceptual foundation in drivetrain systems before attempting service work. No prior background in automotive engineering is required. This course is educational and does not substitute for the supervised hands-on training required by trade apprenticeship or certification programs.
