Navigating Ace and Aro Relationships: A Practical Guide to Communication and Connection
Practical frameworks and communication tools for ace and aro individuals and their partners to negotiate intimacy, connection, and relationship structure with honesty and care.
About this course
Knowing you are ace or aro, or knowing that someone you are in a relationship with is, is only the beginning. The practical work of building a relationship that genuinely works for everyone involved requires honest communication about needs and limits, creative thinking about what connection and intimacy can look like outside of dominant cultural scripts, and the skills to navigate ongoing negotiation as circumstances and needs evolve. This course provides those practical tools.
By the end of this course you will be able to articulate your own experience of attraction and intimacy needs clearly and specifically, use structured communication approaches to discuss orientation and relationship expectations with a partner or potential partner, negotiate relationship structures that honor the full range of needs in a mixed-orientation relationship, identify and challenge the assumptions you have absorbed about what a "real" relationship requires, and build a relationship framework tailored to your actual experience rather than a default model.
What you will learn:
- Self-clarification exercises: mapping your own experience of the different attraction dimensions and what they mean for your relationship needs
- Scripts and approaches for disclosing ace or aro identity to a new partner or to family members
- How to have a relationship-structure conversation: negotiating physical affection, emotional intimacy, and partnership expectations without assuming a shared starting point
- Tools for navigating mixed-orientation relationships where partners have different sexual or romantic needs
- How to handle common difficult responses to ace or aro identity: skepticism, pressure to change, or well-intentioned but misguided concern
- Building a relationship agreement: what it covers, how to revisit it, and how to renegotiate as the relationship develops
- Community and support resources for ace and aro individuals and for partners trying to understand and support an ace or aro loved one
- Self-compassion practices for managing the internalized messages that ace and aro people commonly absorb from a predominantly allosexual culture
The course is organized as a practical communication and relationship-building guide, moving from self-clarification through disclosure, negotiation, and ongoing relationship management. Each section includes exercises and templates: a personal attraction map, a disclosure preparation guide, a relationship agreement template, and a list of community resources. Worked examples illustrate how the frameworks apply in realistic relationship scenarios involving different combinations of orientation and relationship type.
This course is written for ace and aro individuals navigating their own relationships, for partners of ace or aro people, and for those still in the process of understanding their orientation. No prior background is required. This course is informational and educational in nature and does not substitute for therapy or counseling.
